STORY: Gilthonielle Lindëwen is a woman of intense purpose and incredible longing. She is named for her maternal grandmother Gilthoniel, a powerful Elf, who was in turn named for Elbereth of the Varda. Her grandmother fell in love with a mortal man, one of the descendants of the people of Hador the Goldenhaired. She fell in love with his great loyalty to his people and his vivacious personality. Faced with his mortality, he lived life to its fullest so that he might be pleased with it when it came to die. Gilthoniel admired the pace of his life and was determined to live a full and loving mortal life than an empty immortal one. Their daughter lived with her parents’ esprit de vie and added to it a measure of reckless curiosity. Gilthonielle’s mother was constantly exploring the forests of her home for new and interesting discoveries. One day as she crested a rise in the center of a deep wood, a great eagle soared through the valley below. Its great golden feathers shimmered in the fading rays of the sun and her eyes sparkled with curiosity. Despite the lengthening shadows, she followed the eagle’s path into the forest. There she met the man that would be Gilthonielle’s father. He was a tawny skinned man with a peculiar talent. As she saw him in the clearing, the great eagle oeresu landed before him, but not as a falconer and his charge, but as a friend come to visit. She had heard of Thorondor and the Great Eagles, but this was something different. She learned later that he came from a people that would share their minds with chosen animals and be companions for life. Gilthonielle’s mother knew that her love would be forbidden and tried to keep their affair a secret. Eventually Gilthonielle was born and her parents became outcasts. Gilthoniel adopted her granddaughter and brought her to live with the elves, keeping the sins of her parents a secret to her. And so Gilthonielle lived among the elves throughout her childhood. She developed a strong musical talent and was taught by the best bards in their kingdom. She also learned to love the forest as the elves did. She would wander on her own for hours at a time and had a great affinity for the wildlife. As many elves love the beasts of the forest, no one questioned her behavior. Then one day, as she was singing a song and strolling through the woods, a strange pull entered her mind. She could not explain the feeling. It was a similar feeling to being focused intently on something to the ignorance of all else and then suddenly realizing a gnawing hunger that has been building for hours. Gilthonielle could feel a hunger pulling her mind to one side. Unable to ignore this sensation, she strode deeper into the forest. Suddenly she came to a clearing and a giant She-bear roared into vision. The strange hunger had dulled her mind and she was not even afraid of the angry carnivore in her path. The bear emanated an aura of fear and frustration. Then clarity washed over her mind. It was a mother defending her cub from an approaching threat. The tide of understanding became a great wave of perfect resonance. A riptide of love for mother and sun food safe wonderment fear concern smells tastes… It threatened to pull her mind under. A vision of a dark and cozy den danced before her eyes and all the smells of bear life triggered memories in her nostrils. The cub was a He-bear, ieoerecu. There was a dizzying moment of double-vision as Gilthonielle saw the She-bear through her own eyes and the eyes of the bear. She glanced from the She-Bear to herself to ieoerecu and back. She knew that the bear was there the way she knew her arms were lying limp at her sides and that her eyes were closing with exhaustion. Gilthonielle developed the great magic of the beasts from her father and the power of the elves from her grandmother. She soon became curious as to her lineage and after discovering her parents banishment she determined that she must flee the only home she had ever known. She and ieoerecu left to live among Men. Gilthonielle eventually came to a village of men who appreciated her knowledge of music and had a school of bards that she could enjoy and with whom she could make music. One fine autumn day as she was returning to her dwelling from a particularly enjoyable music session, she noticed some fighters in the forest. Concerned for the welfare of the trees and the beasts that lived in them, she ran over to investigate. She was pleased to find a band of fighters in training. Their leader appeared to be a peculiarly dressed man with dark hair. Always looking for new friends, Gilthonielle strode over to the man. This man was Mercaine, a peculiarly introspective vampire fighting for the cause of good. He was enthusiastic about her interest in their group, a band of fighters sworn to protect the forest from all ill-wishers. She swore allegiance to Maethodoron that day and has enjoyed their company ever since. Gilthonielle often feels the sea-longing of her grandmother’s race, however, and must visit the sea from time to time to satiate this longing. |
